Description
This keel boat is a lovely example of a well-known Lavranos cruising design, built and fitted out between 1987-1991. Specifications & Inventory
History These boats have sailed the world and this one is typical - having circumnavigated between 1991 and 1996. On returning from her world cruise, the boat was purchased by a sailing husband and wife - both Yachtmasters - who sailed her on a trip across the Indian Ocean to Madagascar, Mayotte and Mocambique. They have detailed their exploits in a published soft-cover book entitled ’Gone With The Wind in Madagascar’. (Available) There was a change of ownership in 2004 and one year later, the previous owner sold her to me, the fourth owner. She was sailed up along the East-African Coast in November 2005 from Durban to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania where she has been since. We have regularly sailed day and week-end trips in the coastal waters of Tanzania, mainly doing island-hopping, and occasionally crossed the Zanzibar channel for holiday cruises of the wonderful Spice Islands.
Reason for selling She is our first boat and has proven herself sturdy, stable, safe and forgiving - ideal for us, being novices. Unfortunately, although she is a beautiful boat for 4 people, she just is not big enough for our family. Now that we have learnt to sail we are looking for something bigger. Also, we don’t foresee ourselves going blue-water cruising in the near future and it seems a shame to keep a good boat from doing what it was designed for.
General condition Her latest Certificate of Fitness was issued on 19.10.05 after inspection. She is full Category A certified and has been equipped and maintained accordingly. Structurally and mechanically she is sound and ready to cruise the world again, though some cosmetic improvements can be made, such as painting the upper hull and deck, and re-varnishing the wooden toe-rail and rubbing strake. She needs routine anti-fouling, which will be done prior to handing over to the new owner, at my expense. Engine and winches have recently been serviced.
Owners comments & suggestions ‘Gone With the Wind’ is a true go-anywhere blue water cruiser, long keeled, with heavy displacement and fitted out by a master craftsman whose care and workmanship is reflected in her beautiful teak interior with brass accents and teak and holly sole. If you intend exploring the East African Coast or the beautiful Indian Ocean, her location is ideal. Keeping her moored in Dar es Salaam is cheap and easy and flying up once or twice a year for a sailing holiday will probably be less expensive than keeping her in South Africa! Want to learn to sail and prefer a hands-on approach? Find an experienced skipper and sail her back to your part of the world yourself. Sailing and weather conditions around here are mild, giving you ample opportunity to gain confidence and experience and you will not be bogged down by regulations and red tape. Also, for a long distance cruise, this is a great place to start. Just fill up the tanks and point her bows to wherever you wish her to take you. She’s ready, are you?
